Date Night

My favorite insect image.

Dungbeetles are my favorite insect to talk about with guests. The beetle pushing the ball is the male. The female is hanging on tight as the ball is being rolled to a hole that the male has already dug. The ball will be dropped into the hole, the two of them will mate and the eggs will be laid inside the dung ball. The eggs will eventually hatch and the larvae will feed on the dung ball. Quite remarkable. And to think, most people will never even take a second look at them. This image is truly incredible, because if you take a closer look you will see extremely tiny flies around the dung ball.

I love spending time watching wild animals and nature always find a way to teach us that not everything is black and white. Sometimes we need to change our views to see a situation in color.
